Energy Recovery Turbines in Water Distribution Systems

Project: In a joint collaboration with the California Municipal Utilities Association, Marin Municipal Water District, and CWEE, researchers will develop replicable methods and analyses for the optimal integration of in-line energy recovery turbines (ERTs) in urban water distribution systems for renewable energy generation and improved pressure and energy management. The objective of this research is to supply water utilities with innovative methods to reconfigure their operations and participate as generators of renewable energy, and also investigate using ERTs for pressure management to increase system water efficiency and reduce future pipe breaks. Researchers view this as an opportunity for the water and energy sectors to join efforts toward a sustainable, cost-effective, and reliable electricity system through energy demand management, while also benefiting ratepayers through supplemental avoided operating costs.
